WebI don’t know what ship you’re in but you’ll need to adjust the sheet winch so the sail will catch the wind. In other words, try to get the sail as perpendicular to the wind as you can. This should get you moving backwards pretty quickly. If you’re on the dhow (the easy starting ship) you do this by releasing the sheet winch completely.
